• HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS


    LOUISIANA CORE 4

    Note: This course tracking is required for any student wishing to attend a 4-year institution after high school.

    4 units English

    English I, English II, English III, and English IV

    4 units Mathematics

    Algebra I or Algebra I-Pt. 2, Geometry, Algebra II

    Remaining unit shall come from the following:

    Financial Math, Math Essentials, Adv. Math-PreCalculus, Adv. Math-Functions and Statistics, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Probability and Statistics, or Discrete Math

    4 units Science

    Biology, Chemistry

    Remaining 2 units shall come from the following:

    Physical Science, Integrated Science, Physics I,

    Physics of Technology I, Aerospace Science, Biology II, Chemistry II, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physics II, Physics of Technology II, Agriscience II, Anatomy and Physiology, or a locally initiated elective

    4 units Social Studies

    ½ unit of Civics or AP American Government, ½ unit of Free Enterprise, American History

    1 unit shall come from the following:              

    World History, World Geography, Western Civilization, or AP European History

    1 unit shall come from the following:

    World History, World Geography, Western Civilization, AP European History, Civics, Law Studies, Psychology, Sociology, or African American Studies*

    2 units Foreign Language

    2 units from the same foreign language
    or 2 units of speech

    1 unit Arts

    Fine Arts Survey or one unit of Art, Dance, Music, or Theatre

    ½ unit Health Education; 1 ½ units Physical Education

    3 units of Electives

    Total: 24 credits

    After completing two years of high school, students may request an exemption from the LA Core 4 Curriculum. The student and parent or guardian must meet with the counselor to discuss options and/or consequences of not completing the LA Core 4 Curriculum.

    In addition to completing minimum Carnegie units, ALL students must pass required End-Of-Course exams as outlined by the BESE board.

    Exempted LA Core 4 students must meet the following requirements for graduation from a St. Mary Parish High School in the Basic Core Track

     

    Louisiana Basic Core

    Note: This course tracking does not allow you to directly attend a 4-year institution after high school. Students choosing this course tracking are interested in school-to-work or a technical/2-year institutions.

    These requirements are for grades 12 – 11 as of Fall, 2014.  Any entering 9th or 10th grader not wishing to follow Core 4 will follow the Louisiana JumpStart Program. Program requirements vary.

    4 units in English

    English I, English II, English III, and English IV or Senior Applications in English

    4 units in Mathematics

    Algebra I or Algebra I-Pt. 1 & Pt. 2, Geometry. 

    Remaining 2 units shall come from the following:

    Algebra II, Financial Math, Math Essentials, Adv. Math-Pre-Calculus, Adv. Math-Functions & Statistics,  Calculus

    3 units in Science

    Biology

    1 unit shall come from the physical science cluster:

    Physical Science, Chemistry I, Physics I

    1 unit shall come from the following:

    Biology II, Chemistry II, Earth  Science, Environmental Science, Agriscience II, Anatomy and Physiology, an additional course from the physical Science cluster

    3 units in Social Studies

    Civics or AP American Government, American History

    1 unit shall come from the following:

    World History, Western Civilization, World Geography, or AP European History

    ½ unit in Health Education

    1 ½ units Physical Education

    1 unit of Career Exploration or Prep

    7 units of Electives

    Total: 24 credits

     Students in the 9th or 10th grade who choose JumpStart will select a pathway to complete
    for graduation. Presently, BHS can offer the following pathways 
    to our students. Please
