Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Mary Billiot (formerly Macklin)
This is my 25th year of teaching in St. Mary Parish and have been here at Berwick High School teaching Biology (as well as other science courses when needed) since the year 2000. I am the co-sponsor for the Science Club and sponsor the Robotics Club. I have varied interests when it comes to science and often go to a variety of teacher workshops ranging from enviornmental themes to robotics to molecular biotechnology. I enjoy these workshops becuase it gives me a wide knowledge base from which to help guide my students as they are all unique and have varied interests as well. I stress to them the importance of thinking through a scenario so as to become critical thinkers so they can do well in all areas of their lives and not just biology. Hopefully they leave this course not only knowing the biological content they are required to know but also better critical thinkers.
This year we will be implementing new State Science Standards in all of the Science Courses. Not only have the standards changed but the way in which we are to teach them has as well. This year of course is a learning year with implementing these standards and strategies so all will not be perfect but beleive me when i say that the Science Teachers at BHS have been working throughout the summer in order to better handle these changes.
The new style of teaching is Phenomena Based and basically allows the students a more active role in learning the material. They will have a lot of individual work as well as group work, research and activities that on occassion will have to be done outside of class. As much as possible i intend to have this work done within the class but given we are on a new 7 period class day with shorten hours, it will be a period of adjustment for all.
Also, given the large class sizes this year, i have opted to NOT have a prep period in order to make the class sizes a bit smaller. If you are in need of a conference it will have to be before or after school. I am always available via email at email@example.com or you can call the school office and leave a message and i can return your call 985-384-8450.
