VLP Academic Honesty Protocols

  • According to the St. Mary Parish Virtual Learning Program Academic Honesty Guidelines, academic dishonesty includes plagiarism. It represents an attempt by a student to claim credit for knowledge, skills, or resources that he or she does not possess. 

    Protocols adopted by the SMPVLP include the following interventions:

    Infraction 1: The instructor issues a class-level warning to the student and the home/school facilitator regarding the academic dishonesty issue. The student is advised as to how this issue can be avoided in the future, and the instructor deducts points from the assignment’s score based on the severity of the issue; the instructor may request that the student resubmit the assignment.

    Infraction 2: The instructor notifies SMPVLP administrative staff of the repeated offense. The staff reviews evidence submitted by the instructor and, if merited, issues a program-level warning to the student and the home/school facilitator that includes more information about avoiding academic dishonesty. The instructor scores the assignment as 0% and does not allow a resubmission. A copy of the notification is also sent to the school counselor at the student’s host school and can result in disciplinary action at the student’s assigned school. 

    Infraction 3: The instructor notifies SMPVLP administrative staff of the repeated offense. The staff reviews evidence submitted by the instructor and, if merited, issues a program-level notification to the student, the home/school facilitator, and the administrative staff of the student’s host school that a third infraction of the program’s academic honesty guidelines has occurred.   In additional to disciplinary action at the student’s assigned school, students can be removed from the course with no credit awarded.
