Network Access

  • St. Mary Parish Schools Technology Department is required to limit access by students to certain online sites and applications in order to meet CIPA (Children’s Internet Protection Act) requirements.

Updates to the network this summer will help address the need to differentiate levels of Internet access based on a user’s assigned role.  These roles include

    • Limited: For users who do not possess network credentials or who have not authenticated to the network, Internet access will be minimal.
    • Student:  For all district students, Internet access is limited to sites designated as “safe.”
    • Educators and Staff:  For adult employees, Internet access is expanded; questionable or inappropriate sites remain blocked.

The Technology Department has issued the following guidelines for accessing the St. Mary Parish network:

     Wired Devices:

    • Wired devices (desktop computers, for example), will pick up online permissions (roles) automatically when a user logs into a computer using district-issued credentials (username and password). Therefore, it is increasingly important that an adult user remember to log off any wired device when work is completed, allowing the next user to login and reset the online permissions to the appropriate role.

     Wireless Devices:

    • School Board-owned devices (Laptops and Tablets)
      • Using the St. Mary Parish School’s Wireless Network:
        • Connect to the school or district wireless network with password in Network Settings.
        • Open a new tab in an Internet browser (Safari, Google, etc.)
        • Authenticate to the district’s network using district-issued credentials. This authentication will provide users with the level of Internet access allowed by their designated roles.
      • Using Other Networks:
        • Connect to a home or business wireless network using Network Settings.
(Note: Open networks require no password but represent a security risk.)
        • Open a new tab in an Internet browser (Safari, Google, etc.)
        • Authenticate to the district’s network using district-issued credentials.

Note:  A device owned by the St. Mary Parish School Board will retain Internet access based on a user’s assigned role even when that device is on a home or business network. St. Mary Parish will filter and record Internet activity wherever a district-owned device is located.

    • Individually-owned  devices:
      • Using the St. Mary Parish School’s Wireless Network
        • Connect to the school or district wireless network with password in Network Settings.  User will be assigned Limited access.
        • Authenticate to the district’s network using district-issued credentials to gain expanded access based on role using http://lsurl.me/in or the image link below.
