When kids build and design, they are building creative problem solving dispositions that can be applied to any pursuit or goal. Whether it’s a physical design or designing a new system to make life better or more efficient for humans, design thinking is a way to build habits of innovators! Give these a try!
Paddle Power: Use cups, straws, rubber bands and other household materials to build a boat with a propellor. Use the bathtub to test your designs!
Mystery Bag Challenge: Follow the link to find free printable design challenges. Fill a bag with materials found around the house and have kids pick a challenge card! Extend this by having them create and film a commercial to sell their designs!
Marshmallow Challenge: Work as a team to build the tallest freestanding spaghetti structure holding a marshmallow on top!
PBS Design Squad: View global challenges your kids may want to join, or click on Build to view many options for kids’ build projects!
Think Like an Engineer: Watch the video in the link to learn how engineers think. Then, kids create a solution to the problem presented. Extend by brainstorming other problems and sketch or build ideas for solutions.
Build a Straw Bridge: Use whatever materials you have to build a bridge connecting one surface to another. Can you drive a car across it? How much weight can it hold?
Cardboard Challenge: Watch this cool story of a young boy who built an arcade out of cardboard. Use this website for ideas to create your own designs!
More Design Challenges!: You can always make up your own, or have kids prepare design challenges for one another!
