Goal Setting & Quiet Time Contract
-
For younger kids, this time should be spent napping. Read a book to them or sing songs until they fall asleep. For older kids, we want to relate this quiet time to what they need in order to accomplish their own goals. Use these suggestions to come to a common understanding.
Talk to your kids about the daily schedule and ask them what they would like to add and why they think it might be important. Listen to their responses and share your own thoughts. Next, ask them to set some at-home learning goals using these prompting questions:
- What do you wish you could learn more about?
- What subject do you wish you were better at?
- What can you do to work toward these goals?
- How can we support you in accomplishing your goal?
Then, ask them for ideas on how we might all help each other out in order to meet our goals. Write down ideas, and include a discussion about the need for our brains and bodies to rest. In the afternoons, let’s all give one another time for quiet reading. If you don’t choose to read, your other option is to close your eyes and rest in bed. If you do choose to read, you may do so anywhere, as long as you are quietly reading the whole time.
When you have a mutual understanding, ask your children to sign the understanding and commit.
Consider adding these to a journal. You may choose to update these goals each Monday and end each week with a discussion of successes and future goals.
