  • National Cyber Security Awareness Month (Week 2)

Posted by Susan Dupre at 10/12/2016

Week 2 focuses on creating a culture of cybersecurity in the workplace by promoting best practices.

"All organizations – from large and small businesses to healthcare providers, academic institutions, government agencies and civil society – can experience data breaches or be targets of cybercrime, which can result in stolen intellectual property, theft of personal information or – if our critical infrastructure is attacked – a disruption to our way of life."

Cyber security is a shared responsibility. No individual, no business, and no government is solely responsibile for securing the Internet.  Each of us plays a role. Acting to raise community awareness, educate young people, and training employees will help to make our "digital society safer and more resistant from attachks and more resilient if an attach occurs."

The StaySafeOnline.org website (sponsors of National Cyber Security Awareness Week) offers a Technology Checklist for Businesses that includes many of the best practices that are already in place in St. Mary Parish:

    • Restrict the locations to which work files can be saved or copied.
St. Mary Parish employees and students all have OneDrive accounts that keep district information within the district.  Employees are cautioned to limit cloud-based storage to the district's OneDrive for Business app, particularly for files with sensitive information. Free services such as Dropbox do not provide the legal protection appropriate for business use.
    • Require unique, strong passwords that are changed regularly.
Employees are required to create passwords that follow complexity rules and to change them several times each year.
    • Educate employees about remining alert to suspicious email.
Past CyberSAFE blogs have dealt with spotting problems in your Inbox. Consider reviewing these CyberSAFE Archive Page topics: "What's Lurking in Your Inbox?" (4/26/2016), "Email Spam: Take Control of Your Inbox" (4/20/2016), and "Ransomware: Your Computer Held Hostage" (5/4/2016).
