  • Why Reusing Your Passwords Is Riskier Than Ever

Posted by Susan Dupre at 9/14/2016 12:00:00 PM

By now, we are all aware of the security issues surrounding passwords. We know we should create difficult-to-hack passwords that include letters, numbers, and symbols and that we should avoid using the names of children or pets as part of our passwords.

However, after we create a new complex password, we often use it for many web applications, from social media to shopping sites--and here's where the new threat exists.

A new report released by ThreatMetrix analyzed billions of cyber attacks during the first three months of 2016 and reported an alarming rise in botnet attacks. These attacks are carried out by cyber criminals who infect a network of private computers with malware and then launch a massive attack with actions that appear to be normal customer behavior:  logins, payments, new account applications.

The criminals use stolen usernames and passwords that have been posted on "dark web" sites to test the credentials on hundreds of different sites.  Once a login and password are found to be real, they begin trying those credentials on other sites, especially banking or shopping sites, in an effort to gain more information about the victim--which leads to identity theft.

ThreatMetrix also warns consumers to check their credit card statements for little items that might otherwise be ignored. Criminals often test stolen credit cards by making small donations to charity organizations in order to test if the cards can actually be used.

So, as aggravating and difficult as it is, we really should create a different complex password for every online e-commerce or banking site we use.
